Craig Gingerich and Jerry Seward were first on the track in round 1. Seward must have heard stories on point leader Gingerich as he left with the ugly red light giving Gingerich the win. Next out was newcomer Roy Hagadorn, who got his first round win at the lighting of the red by Greg Hilanbrant. Larry Beutlich drew William Conte and both drivers cut lights in the .04s. Conte was off his dial and Beutlich off his gas pedal taking the win heading to the next round. Marc Fisher was next with an 11.42 dial against Dan Bouldry who just could not handle the wait with his 9.90 dialed 1968 Corvette. He left before his tree was active earning a trip to the buy back line. Candace Swenson finished up the first round taking a .065 light to victory over Gary Guest.
Five of the six first round runner-ups bought back in with only Conte calling it a day. Greg Hilanbrant put the points leader, Gingerich on the trailer with a .145 light to Gingerich's, close to perfect, but no cigar, -.006. Marc Fisher moved to the next round when he ran the better package against Candace Swenson. Beutlich advanced as Guest broke out by one-thousandth of a second, an number the would ring dearly for Beutlich later. Hagadorn also advanced to the next round on the strength of a .065 light when Bruce Littler was well off his dial. Bouldry's opponent, Richard Martell went red allowing him to ignore the light and run a 9.921 on 9.90 dial
Five Corvettes left and the bye run went to Roy Hagadorn earning his third round win. Bouldry was up against Fisher with 9.90 to 11.42 and a rematch of round one. Both drivers were off clean with Bouldry taking a slight advantage. Fisher was 11.437 on the 11.42 dial but Bouldry's better tree got him the win running 9.934 @ 136.38 MPH. Beutlich moved on to the semi's on the strength of a .053 reaction time ending Hilanbrant's day. Hilanbrant did well to day with his Advaned Automotive Repair of Cape Corral prepped Corvette
Beutlich got the bye into the final. It was Bouldry against Hagadorn in the other semi-final race. Hagadorn was .074 green and made a valiant effort to stay ahead of the '68. He could not and Bouldry was on the way to the final with another 9-second pass.
The final round Beutlich was dialed 13.20. He lined up against Bouldry who dialed 9.88 and was ready to give it all. Beutlich had the lead with a .023 light to .063 for Bouldry. Trying to stay ahead of the 9.9 Corvette, Beutlich stayed in it...too much. He broke out by a measly one-thousandth of a second...(he giveth and he taketh away). It was big enough for Bouldry to get his first Corvette Challenge Event win.
